California USA State 2019

Post Season Blog Week 1: California USA State

The second weekend after the CIF State Tournament wrestlers from all over California flock to Fresno California in search of the coveted bear head trophy given to the top three wrestlers in each weight class.  UTB sent 17 wrestlers up state this year and placed 11 with 2 state champions, two 2nd place finishes, a 3rd place finish.

In the 4 year history of the club, UTB has never had a more successful state tournament.  It was a weekend of many firsts for UTB Wrestling.

First Girls State Champion:

Noemi "Mimi" Codero made UTB history this weekend by becoming our first USA girls state champion.  Mimi not only won herself the title but she did it without giving up a single point.  Her first match of the day she pinned her first opponent in the second round.  Mimi followed that win up with a 6-0 victory in the semi-finals and a 6-0 win in the finals.  Big things are ahead for this little girl, keep her on your radar!

First Middle School State Champion

Abram Cline came aboard this year and has made an immediate impact.  He came in and began leading by example.  Helping to continue building the culture at UTB of hard work, and dedication both on and off the mat.  He walked into the tournament as a 6x state finalist and a 3x state champion.  His goal was to finish his youth wrestling career with a title.  He did just that and in a dominating fashion by not giving up a single offensive point all tournament.  Abram teched his first opponent 16-0, he kept the ball rolling into the quarter finals match by getting the fall in under a minute.  Because the USA State Tournament isn't seeded his toughest match came in the semi finals where he won 6-1, and didn't look back as he won 6-0 in the finals.

First Time with 10 placers:

Prior to this weekend the most USA State placers UTB had in a single year was 5 and that was last year.  This year we doubled that with 10.

WOW Duals and Terminator

Not only did UTB have wrestlers competing at the state tournament but a few athletes competed outside the state of California as well.  Billy Townson and Steven Gomez III were both asked by dual teams to wrestle at the World of Wrestling Duals in Tulsa Oklahoma.  Billy wrestled for Cali Gold and went undefeated, crushing the competition going 7-0 with 5 pins and didn't give up any points.  Steven wrestled for POWA out of Colorado and went 3-2 with 2 decisions, and a major.

Over in Arizona UTB was well represented at Terminator World Championships by Madden Poderick, Diego "Emi" Herrera, and Hayden Schaffer.  All of them placing in the top 4.
